Girls Basketball Earns Championship Title

Longwood Girls Basketball Wins  2021 Suffolk County Conference ChampionshipThe Longwood girls varsity basketball team capped off their season by defeating Walt Whitman 56-30, earning the 2021 Suffolk County Conference 1 Championship title.

“Words cannot express how proud and thrilled I am for these young ladies to have this moment,” said Coach James Castiglione. “With all the adversity they have faced this past year, they collectively were determined not to be denied this title and continued to represent themselves, family, and our Longwood Community to the best of their abilities.”

The Lady Lions went into the championship game as undefeated League One Champions for the third consecutive year and Suffolk County AA Finalists in 20.

"Congratulations to the team and coaches on a well-deserved success,” said Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Alicia Smith. “Their victory is about much more than just the game itself. There is an additional meaning for this group. Their experience this season has become more symbolic than just the wins alone.”

Seniors Angelene Bailey and Rachel Mandaro will continue their athletic careers after graduation attending SUNY New Paltz and Rochester Institute of Technology, respectively.

“Despite the unprecedented challenges, the girls’ basketball team and coaches have had an incredible season, and we are exceptionally proud of the remarkable accomplishments of this group,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan. “The team represents the pride, spirit, and heart of the Longwood community.”
