Biological Topics

This report topic should consist of a minimum of three pages with pictures being extra and optional.

You may chose any organism that lives in the sea for this report. The list below is a sampling of suggested organisms, but you are not limited to these.

Be sure to include the following for the organism that you chose:

Scientific name -- Genus and species or for a particular group their class or order

Habitat -- where dose it live: open ocean (pelagic), coastal, reef, or bay.

Is it part of the plankton, nekton (free swimming), or is it benthic (bottom dwelling).

Nutrition -- What and how does it eat. (Produce, filter feeder, predator, scavenger)

Behaviors and Habits -- How does it hunt? Where does it hide?

Reproduction-- Sexual or asexual or alternation of generation. Live birth or eggs? What is the gestation period?

Symbiotic relationships -- Mutualistic, commensalistic or parasitic? What organism shares the relationship?

Special features --Special organs or other physiological features. What do they use for offense or defense? How are they helpful or harmful to mankind.

Please include a bibliography citing at least 3 references. Internet sites should have their exact address indicated.

COELENTERATES - Jelly fish, Sea Anemonies, Corals, Portuguese Man of War.

ECHINODERMS - Sea Stars, Sea Cucumbers, Sea Urchins

MOLLUSKS - Snails, Clams, Octopus - Squid, Nautilis

ARTHROPODS/CRUSTACEANS - Crabs, Lobsters, Shrimp

FISH - Chondrichthyes --sharks, rays, skates
           Ostheichthyes -- the bony fish - salmon, tuna, barracuda, blues, bass

MAMMALS - Whales --Toothed, Baleen
                        Seals, Sea Otters, Manatees
