0904 Concert Band (Grades 9 & 10)

Prerequisite: Recommendation of previous year's performance director This course is designed to develop the ensemble performing skills of brass, woodwind and percussion players. Elements of study within this course such as breath control, articulation, tone production, technical facility, melodic and rhythmic vocabularies, and sightreading will be conveyed through the performance of a wide range of symphonic band literature. All members of this ensemble are required to perform at all scheduled concerts, including; The Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and The NYSSMA Festival. Excused absences may be granted under extreme circumstances. With the exception of several larger instruments owned by the district, students are required to provide their own instruments for the concert band.

Recommendation of previous year's performance director This course is designed to develop the ensemble performing skill of students interested in playing orchestral string instruments. Music ranging in repertoire of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods will be performed. All members of the orchestra are required to perform with the organization at all scheduled concerts, including winter, spring, music and art festival. Students must provide their own instruments with the exception of several of the larger instruments owned by the district.

0908 Music Theory I
1 CREDIT


Music Theory I presents the basic concepts and elements of music. The course will culmintae with the basic knowledge of 4-part writing, voice-leading, counterpoint and harmonic progression. Extensive drill work as well as aural and written exercises will be included. Text, worksheets, lecture, keyboard, singing, listening and computer lab drill work will introduce each unit of study and be a part of daily assignments. Assignments may be administered in class as well as for homework. A minimum final grade of a 85 is required to enroll in Theory II upon completion of this course. Keyboard experience helpful, but not necessary.

Prerequisite for 9th grade: Recommended by audition and previous year's performance director. This course is designed to develop choral singing skills and enhance vocal production. Elements of study include breathing techniques, guides to improve tone quality, choral articulation, warm-up exercises, sight-reading material, and rudimentary musical terminology. A broad spectrum of choral literature will be offered. All members of the chorus are required to perform with the organization at all scheduled concerts. Students must demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency of vocal part. Attendance at planned concerts. Class participation is mandatory.

0920 AP Music Theory II (Grades 11-12)
1 CREDIT


Advaned Placement Prerequisite: Successful completion of Music Theory I
with a minimum of a final grade of 85 or better.

This course is a continuation of Music Theory 1. Emphasis will be on harmonic analysis, four part writing, and extensive mastery of aural skills. Students must take the AP exam in May and complete a special AP project. Students requesting this course must complete the required AP course summer assignment by August 15th.
