Ethel Neger
Ethel Neger was born
on February 18, 1926. She was the daughter of Helen (Parisen) and
Daniel Neger. After seeing the movie Here Comes the Waves Ethel
decided to join the Navy. Not having reached the age to join, she
“borrowed” her sister Helen’s birth certificate and used that to
enter. Before entering the Navy as a Wave she was living in Yaphank
and working in her father’s florist as a store clerk. Upon entering
the service she completed her boot training at Hunter College in New
York and was assigned to Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Maryland
for further training. Her final assignment was at the St. Albins,
Naval Hospital in New York where she was discharged on August 21,
1946.
