Updates from the Superintendent

September 18, 2020 -- 6:07 pm

Thank you for your patience as the Suffolk County Department of Health (DOH) conducted their contact tracing investigation linked to the confirmed COVID-19 cases at both Longwood High School and Charles E. Walters Elementary (CEW) School.

Based on guidance from the DOH, we are happy to report that students and staff can safely return to both CEW and the high school on Monday morning September 21, 2020.  We will continue the use of additional deep cleaning protocols and sanitizing throughout the weekend ahead.

The individuals who have had a confirmed case of COVID-19 will not be allowed to return to school for at least 14 days.  Additionally, individuals who had close contact with the student or staff member have been notified by the DOH and will also remain in quarantine.

As the pandemic continues to spread throughout our country, we urge you to take all necessary precautions to limit COVID-19 spread in our community including, staying home when sick, washing your hands often, covering coughs and sneezes, wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, and disinfecting frequently touch objects and surfaces.

Our greatest priority is the safety of our school community. It is important to remember that children are greatly influenced by adults' reactions when facing difficult circumstances. I encourage everyone to remain calm and to be empathetic and respectful to those affected.

We are grateful for your ongoing support, especially as we face this challenging situation together.

September 17, 2020 -- 11:30 pm

Late this evening, the District was notified that a Longwood High School student has tested positive for COVID-19. After receiving a positive test, the student must quarantine pursuant to the Department of Health (DOH).  Contract tracing will be conducted immediately, and the student will not return to school until the District receives clearance.

The student has had limited contact with students and staff only in attendance one day this week. However, out of an abundance of caution and following the guidance issued by the New York State Education Department and DOH, Longwood High school will be closed to all students and staff tomorrow, Friday, September 18. All students at the high school will remain on a distance learning model tomorrow.

Building closure will ensure the District can thoroughly clean and disinfect areas in the building that were accessible to the student. Additionally, the District will continue to work collaboratively with the DOH regarding any other mitigating measures necessary.

At this time, we are planning to reopen our high school on Monday, September 21, with the DOH's approval.  Should that information change, you will be notified immediately.  All other schools in the District, with the exception of Charles E. Walters Elementary School, will be open tomorrow, Friday, September 18.

We apologize for this late notice; however, we wanted to inform you immediately.  We will move through this together and will continue to share new information as it becomes available.

September 17, 2020 -- 12:30 pm

As we communicated yesterday evening, a Charles E. Walters (CEW) staff member has tested positive for COVID-19. Today and tomorrow, CEW students and staff are engaged in distance learning to allow the Suffolk County Department of Health (DOH) to conduct a contact tracing investigation. We are following all protocols and guidance outlined by the CDC, DOH, and our reopening plan.

All information requested by the DOH has been submitted, and at this time, we are waiting for further guidance. The DOH will dictate our actions moving forward.

I want to take this opportunity to compliment the staff and students of CEW for making a seamless transition to distance learning. We prioritized making these transitions on short notice during our reopening planning, understanding that there would likely be sporadic positive cases. The plans we have in place have allowed us to react very quickly.

I also wish to thank the community for your patience and understanding as we step through these processes to mitigate the virus's spread and safeguard our community's health.

We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

September 16, 2020 -- 8:00 pm

Late this afternoon, the District was notified that a staff member at Charles E. Walters Elementary School has tested positive for COVID-19. At 7:30 p.m. tonight, the positive test result was confirmed by the Department of Health (DOH) and the staff member and the students in the class must quarantine pursuant to the DOH guidelines. Contact tracing will be conducted by the DOH, and the staff member and the students in the class will not return to school until the District receives clearance. At this time, all students involved have been contacted by building administration.

The staff member has had limited contact with students and staff. We have not been directed by the DOH to close the building. However, out of an abundance of caution and with our commitment to our community to remain safe at all times, I have decided to close CEW to students and staff on Thursday, September 17 and Friday, September 18. All students and staff at CEW will remain on a distance learning model for both days.

Building closure will ensure the District can thoroughly clean and disinfect areas in the building that were accessible to the staff member. Additionally, the District will continue to work collaboratively with the DOH regarding any other mitigating measures necessary.

It’s important to remember that the health and safety protocols in place in all our buildings, including social distancing, mask-wearing, and hand-washing protocols, were intentionally designed to mitigate the risk to students and staff in the event a positive case was present and subsequently identified. We are committed to providing your child and our staff with a safe and healthy academic environment.

I will update the district as additional information becomes available.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing cooperation with our COVID-19 prevention policies and procedures as we work to help protect our students, staff members, and families.
